The Robesafe research group of UAH is working on this project dedicated to developing a smart vehicle tailored to the specific needs of senior drivers. The first prototype already exists, 100% designed in UAH.

It is evident: the world population ages and it is calculated that in the year 2030 in Spain one out of every 3 drivers will be over 65 years old. Robesafe works to ensure that the mobility and independence needs of the elderly are not interrupted by the deterioration, due to age, of driving skills.

The PhD student of the Robesafe group from UAH Eduardo Romera Carmena has won the prize for the best article prepared by a student at the Intelligent Vehicles Symposium Congress (IV 2017) held between June 10 and 14 in Redondo Beach, California (USA ), for the work entitled 'Efficient ConvNet for Real-time Semantic Segmentation' .

Congress IV is an international reference where researchers, engineers and students from industry, universities, research centers and government agencies are invited to present their latest research work on smart vehicles . It is sponsored by the IEEE Intelligent Transportation Systems Society (ITSS) and in its 2017 edition, 297 works by authors from 30 different countries were presented. Attendance exceeded 400 participants.

Roberto Arroyo, doctorando del departamento de Electrónica de la UAH e investigador del grupo Robesafe, ha quedado finalista en el congreso internacional de robótica ‘Robotics. Science and Systems Conference’ con un sistema sobre conducción autónoma que funciona de una forma parecida al cerebro humano, actualizando de forma automática el entorno de conducción, lo que mejora la seguridad en la conducción de vehículos inteligentes.

El trabajo premiado se titula ‘Street-View Change Detection with Deconvolutional Networks’ y detecta los cambios estructurales que puedan producirse en entornos urbanos. La detección se realiza mediante sensores y la información se convierte en una herramienta muy útil a la hora de garantizar la seguridad en la conducción autónoma. ‘Con estos sensores se actualiza de forma permanente la información de los mapas que tienen integrados los vehículos autónomos evitando, de este modo, que puedan producirse accidentes ante cualquier cambio en la calzada o en su entorno’, explica Roberto Arroyo.

'Visual SLAM Algorithms for Aerial Robots' , a project of Sergio García Gonzalo , a student of the UAH Master's Degree in Telecommunications Engineering , has received the Robotnik Award for the Best Final Master's Project in Robotics 2015-2017 awarded by the Spanish Society for Research and Development in Robotics (SEIDROB). The teacher Mª. Elena López Guillén, from the Robesafe research group of the Electronics Department of the University of Alcalá, was in charge of directing the project.



The work studies and develops various techniques that allow a small aerial robot (drone) to locate itself autonomously inside an unknown building . One of the main difficulties in locating a drone inside a building is the impossibility of using a GPS sensor to obtain its absolute position, as is usually done in outdoor environments. In addition, the absence of contact with the environment and the rapid dynamics of its movement also complicate the location compared to other types of ground robots.
